Florence “Toni” Sumner Stamper, 91, of Wilson died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church followed by visiting. Burial will then take place in Maplewood Cemetery.
She was a daughter of Morgan Coe and Florence Phillips Sumner. Upon graduation from Charles L. Coon High School, she moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., where she lived until her marriage to William Palmer Stamper on Feb. 14, 1940. Their marriage lasted for 60 years until his death in 2000. A son, Robert Emerson Stamper, preceded them in death.
During her years in Wilson, she worked at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Wilson County Sheriff’s Office and the Wilson County Tax Department. As a member of the Wilson Woman’s Club for over 25 years, she held elected offices and numerous chairmanships. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 60 years.
Surviving are her sons, William “Bill” Palmer Stamper Jr., and Mark Phillips Stamper (Jennifer), all of Raleigh; grandchildren, Allison Thorne of Rock Ridge, Blake Stamper of Raleigh and Sabrina Wertz of Williamsburg, Va.; great-grandchildren, Cameron Stamper, Connor Thorne and Raven Wertz; great-great-granddaughter, Alexis Michelle Buckley; sister, Anne Sumner Brunson (Bobby), of Wilson; daughter-in-law, Susan Baker Stamper; sister-in-law, Pat Fuller Stamper; special cousin, Virginia McKittrick; and close nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1423, Wilson, NC 27894.
